Government Refuses NGO Monitoring of Referendum Signature Checking

ZAGREB, August 30, 2018 - Public Administration Minister Lovro Kuščević said on Thursday that representatives of civil initiatives would not be allowed to monitor the checking of signatures collected for referendum petitions but that a contract would be signed with a company to do it.

Ministries to Check Referendum Signatures

ZAGREB, August 2, 2018 - The government on Thursday instructed the Public Administration Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior to verify the number and authenticity of signatures collected by the "Truth about the Istanbul Convention" initiative and the "People Decide" initiative and to check if the signatures for the petition against the Convention were collected in line with the law.

Referendum Initiative Accuses Government of Dragging Its Feet

ZAGREB, July 28, 2018 - The People Decide civil initiative on Friday expressed concern that the government had still not decided to count and verify signatures collected to call a referendum on changing the election law and said that it had sent an appeal to European institutions regarding the "undermined independence of the referendum process."

Activists Deliver 38 Boxes with Signatures for Election System Referendum

ZAGREB, June 13, 2018 - Representatives of the civil initiative The People Decide on Wednesday delivered to parliament 38 boxes with 405,342 signatures for a referendum question to amend election legislation and 407,469 signatures for a question depriving national minority representatives of the right to decide on the formation of the government and the state budget.

Initiative Suddenly Says It Has Enough Signatures for Referendum After All

ZAGREB, June 11, 2018 - The civil initiative "The truth about the Istanbul Convention" said on Monday that it had collected 377,635 signatures for a referendum on cancelling the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence which, it said, was a sufficient number of signatures.

President Denies that Meeting with Conservative Activist Was “Secret”

ZAGREB, June 3, 2018 - President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović repeated on Sunday that she did not want to comment on the content of the question of a recently completed campaign for a referendum to change the election law, but that she believed the will of the people should be respected, adding that her meeting with Željka Markić, leader of the conservative “In the Name of the Family” civic group, unofficially one of the organisers of one of the two recent referendum campaigns, was not a secret meeting.

Civic Initiative Gathers Enough Signatures for Election Law Referendum
