Stari Grad Restaurants

By paul 20 September 2012

Dining in Stari Grad should be on the list of things to do on holiday on Hvar, even if you are not staying in the town. There is a great selection of restaurants offering something a little different, whether you are looking for waterfront action or an authentic stone interior. Eremitaž across the water has a deservedly good reputation, while the oldest restaurant in the oldest town in Croatia, Kod Barbe Luke, offers great fish specialities on the water in the opposite direction.

Pizzeria Marko is the heartbeat of the town, offering great and affordable 12-month fare, and there are numerous other great eateries in the old town. But none is as quirky as Antika.

What makes it the quirkiest restaurant on Hvar? There is no simple answer to that, it is a combination of wonderful touches at every turn, which has created a totally unique dining experience. Perhaps it is the 'secret' room upstairs, with a bathroom which is actually in someone else's house...

Perhaps it is the way the menus are stylishly presented.

Perhaps it is the fact that its main outside space, in a splendid old square, is several metres from the restaurant.

Perhaps it is the wonderful signage, welcoming guests to the House of Food.

Perhaps it is the wonderfully secluded room across the street where one can enjoy a range of the excellent Antika cocktails.

Perhaps it is the delightful hidden terrace - my favourite place in Stari Grad - where one can truly relax away from the crowds. This picture was taken out of season - it really is worth popping in for a drink and chilling in the leafy stone space.

Perhaps it is the dumb waiter which shuffles drinks up from the bar below.

Perhaps it is the antiquated cash machine.

Perhaps it is the sense of Stari Grad's history, of which one catches a glimpse at every turn.

Perhaps it is the choice of dining outside, downstairs, or in the 'secret' room, which has the air of a museum.

Perhaps it is the little authentic touches of Old Dalmatia.

Perhaps it is because the food is very good, with tourists keeping the staff busy on our visit in April.

Perhaps it is the cosy interior, with exposed stone and a warm welcome.

Perhaps it is the open kitchen, where you can watch the chef prepare the food, using many home-grown products.

Perhaps it is the combination of features and decor which make it a very original restaurant visually.

Or perhaps it is owner Boško, pictured right, just a very nice man and a hidden encyclopedia of fascinating information about Hvar.
