Record August for Dubrovnik, and 12 Month Ryanair Flights Closer

By 28 August 2016

Dubrovnik Airport is breaking all records, a trend that looks set to continue if Ryanair manages to establish a 12-month connection, with discussions ongoing according to ExYuAviation on August 28, 2016.

TCN has been reporting all summer about record passenger traffic to the country's airports, with Split becoming the first airport in Croatian history to handle more than half a million passengers in a single month in July 2016. Dubrovnik has also been experiencing strong growth, with this year's August traffic up 11.3% on the corresponding period so far, and all the signs are that this will be a record year for the airport, whose new terminal is approaching completion.

The report by ExYuAviation contains some other mouth-watering information, that talks between budget airline Ryanair and Dubrovnik are ongoing and are making progress. Ryan is proposing a 12-month service to connect Dubrovnik to several destinations, as well the possibility of operating internal flights inside Croatia:

"Following discussions with local authorities, the airport and Tourist Board, Ryanair requested for Dubrovnik Airport to reduce its fees and sign a multi-year contract prior to it starting operations. Ryanair's Route Development Manager, Luis Fernandez-Mellado, said the budget carrier is willing to maintain year-round flights from Dubrovnik, describing it as an extremely interesting destination. He added there is already strong demand for the airline to introduce services to the coastal city, which would prove as an excellent city-break option during the winter months. Mr Fernandez-Mellado also hinted at the possibility of Ryanair operating domestic flights within Croatia, noting that it runs a number of domestic services within European Union-member states. Following talks with the airline, the Mayor of Dubrovnik, Andro Vlahušić, said the city is prepared to sign an agreement with Ryanair which would be applicable until 2024."
