Rowan Carstairs

Rowan Carstairs
As a graduate in philosophy Rowan’s first careers were in teaching and then social work. Whilst working in Canada Rowan decided to set up an education and training company with an accountant friend and in 1982 the GE Group Ltd was launched in the United Kingdom.

The company grew and was fortunate in capturing the Eastern European and Russian market as communism gave way to free enterprise. By the time Rowan sold his share interest in the company to the Pearson Group, GE Group operated education and training centres in countries of the former Soviet Union and in the United Kingdom. The GE Group offered a range of branded facilities from schools through to corporate training centres.

In 1999 Rowan went into property building up a portfolio of commercial and residential properties in the UK and later becoming active as a Director with various social housing providers. In 2004 Rowan, having watched from afar the breakup of Yugoslavia and being enthused by the creation of Croatia as a sovereign state, travelled extensively through Croatia on a two month expedition. Rowan found in Croatia wonderful people, a diverse and excellent climate, beautiful seas and islands and a Kafkaesque bureaucracy!!

From 2005 Rowan was involved in property development in Croatia, buying and selling land, houses and apartments. With the encouragement of a Croatian business partner Rowan opened the first Western branded real estate agency in Dubrovnik in 2006. Rowan’s Croatian company worked together with the well known London based agency Winkworth to open a Winkworth office in Dubrovnik and later Zagreb. Things went very well until 2008 and the financial crash when Rowan was forced to close his operations in Croatia and return to the UK to ‘regroup’ and deal with the implications of the worldwide economic crisis.

Subsequently Rowan has worked within the property sector in the UK and increasingly asked to join the Boards of various housing associations providing also advice and expertise where needed.

Now, ten years on from the ‘flight’ from Croatia, Rowan is returning to the country to take up residency as Britain leaves the EU, an institution that Rowan values greatly and wishes to remain within. Rowan is currently looking at a number of business opportunities in Croatia and welcomes any interests in new ventures with other entrepreneurs.
