“If you built a tent above it, it would be the biggest circus in the world."

It's quite possible that nobody has ever given a better definition of Split than Miljenko Smoje. It is true, almost everything can be said about Split - that it is the most sporty city, the most crazed, and the city that is not thrilled when anything is too easy. But when you love it, you love it properly. That is Split.

Split is the town of sports, Hajduk, and musical legends. But when we talk about Split, we cannot just mention Hajduk and Torcida, Smoje, Matejuško, Stari Plac and Veli Varoš. Apart from the places that represent the city, the people describe it even more. And among the legends of Split that have forever left their mark, in addition to Smoje, are Oliver Dragojević, Goran Ivanišević, Toma Bebić, and particularly Dino Dvornik, the Croatian king of funk.

Dino Dvornik was the son of renowned Croatian actor Boris Dvornik and would later become an actor himself. Born in Split in 1964, Dino and his older brother Dean would be seen on the big screens across Yugoslavia, and while acting gave Dino a presence in the region, it was music he would be remembered for more.

Dino was responsible for the creating the first domestic funk record released in Yugoslavia. His stardom would quickly spread, and while he was known as the Croatian King of Funk in Yugoslavia, his fame would take him to Europe and the US. One of the most loved Croatian musicians to date, Dino faced his death in 2008 from an overdose. An event that stunned the country, many are still grieving his passing today.

What do Hajduk and Dino Dvornik have in common? While they are true symbols of Split, the people of Split have only shown them love. Hell, when Dvornik even left his beloved Split for Zagreb for professional reasons, the people of Split were kind to him, they understood. Dvornik has marked a special place in the hearts of the people of Split, and next week, you can see exactly why.

In just one week, the city of Split will celebrate one of the most famous musical legends of Croatia in one of the biggest parties yet - the AJ CHA festival in memory of Dino Dvornik. The festival will take place over Dino’s 53rd birthday from August 18-20. From Bačvice to the Riva, the Summer Cinema to Stari Plac - funk music will be heard in every corner of the city.

The festival in his honor, which will be held for the first time, will harness everything Split is as a city - embracing its people, its vibrancy, its craziness, and the love we all have for it.

While early bird tickets are already sold out, tickets for the 3-day event are available. You can find more information here
