City of Split Becomes More Serious About Responsible Waste Management

Is Split’s future in responsible waste management looking brighter?

At the session of the City Council, the City of Split’s Waste Management Plan for 2017 – 2022, among other things, has a basic document with a planned waste management system and measures and activities for its establishment. The plan emphasizes waste as a resource and raw material that can be reused or recycled, which is one of the key principles of the EU’s package for the circular economy, reports Dalmacija Danas on April 24, 2018.

On this occasion, 20 municipal waste bins were set up in the Split City Administration building, and in the coming period, the city districts, public institutions, and schools will also be equipped. This is a symbolic start to a more serious approach to responsible waste management.

Data for 2017 shows that in the city of Split in 2017, the total amount of waste collected was 38.062,11 tons. This waste, which is collected by Čistoća, is delivered entirely to the company “JOLLY EKO” d.o.o. from Šibenik.

Authorized concessioners in the past year collected 34,934.48 tons of paper and cardboard, plastic, glass and textiles, followed by electronics and electronic waste, rubbers, metals and waste batteries and accumulators. Of this, the most significant share was made of metal waste in the amount of 20,135.11 tons. The quantity of packaging waste collected by the trade chains in 2017 amounted to 3,127.63 tons.

At about 550 locations, there are currently 870 paper and cardboard containers, 648 PET containers, 203 glass containers and 119 containers for Tetra Pak packaging. 60 sites in Split also have bins for textiles.

The Waste Management Plan encompasses a set of activities, decisions and measures aimed at establishing a priority order in waste management processes. First of all, it focuses on preventing a generation of waste, reducing the amount of disposal waste, collecting, transporting, recovering, disposing and supervising the performance of these activities, as well as the care of non-hazardous landfills of non-hazardous waste at wild landfills.
