Dubrovnik is a little bit closer to Split. Well, maybe not closer, but the drive will be a little bit shorter. Another part of the A1 motorway has finally been finished, and opened on Friday. Now it's possible to drive on a four lane motorway all the way to city of Ploce, and to the border crossing to Bosnia-Herzegovina near Metkovic. These routes from Vrgorac were not long, but extremely complicated, with several viaducts, bridges and tunnels. Now it will be possible to drive from Split to Dubrovnik via Metkovic or Ploce probably in less than three and a half hours, making day trips much more attractive.

Unfortunately, until some kind of agreement with Bosnia-Herzegovina is reached, the rest of the planned route to Dubrovnik will stay on hold. The problem is that B-H has access to the Adriatic around the city of Neum, and cuts the Croatian coast in two.
